It's Super Tuesday – GO VOTE!

Published by Ryan Healy on February 5th, 2008 in Noteworthy | 8 Comments

Maybe it was all the beer and nachos getting the best of me, but as I watched Tom Brady and my favorite team, the New England Patriots walk off the field yesterday; not undefeated, not Super Bowl champions, but losers of their final game of the year, I was pretty disappointed.

I was ready to witness history. I wanted to watch my favorite team be crowned the best football team of all time. It didn't happen. The only history made was the New York Giants pulling one of the most improbable upsets of all time.

Well, I'm over it. I'm over it because in the grand scheme of things, football records won't have much of a place in the history books. Today, on the other hand, real history can be made.

It's Super Tuesday, and like my favorite Gen-Y political blogger, Constance Seré, said,

"It's like sports that actually count for something bigger than a title in the long run — what could be more exciting?"

Voters in 24 states will be casting votes for their respective party's nominee. On the democratic side, the choice is between a black man and a woman. No matter who is chosen, they will have a very legitimate shot at making history come November.

So please, if you live in one of the 24 states casting their ballots today, get out and vote. Don't wait until November. A vote now is worth ten times more than a vote in the general election.

So what are you waiting for? Go Vote!

Interesting, As a Gen Y'er I am actually more concerned on the future by analyzing the issues. I'm not a racist or sexist if I don't want to vote for these two liberals just so I can see history made. It's almost as bad as the old saying "life is like a box of chocolates", you should see all the candidates as the same chocolate, peel back that chocolate and look on the inside for what you are really interested in.

Voting based on gender, race or party is ridiculous. How about someone talks about how if we go under Universal healthcare like these people want, our taxes will be raised by over 300%, here in PA our sales tax would go from 6% to 17 or 18%.

It's easy to come up with plans and have the public follow them blindly, it's another to hear the issues and resolutions, look into and research them and then come up with your own conclusion.

If we truly are heading into a recession, how is raising our taxes and making us pay more really the solution?

Chris,

Good points. analyzing the issues is what we all should do, but after all that analysis, we still need to vote. So get out and vote for one of the republicans!

Ryan,

On that note, if there are people out there who would like a challenge, I have a great way for voting. I would like those who say that they REALLY DO vote on the issues and not by race, gender, party or popularity to go to http://www.electoralcompass.com

This way you can judge issues on a per issue basis and find out not only where you stand but which candidate is best for you. If it turns out to be Hillary Clinton, God forbid, then go vote for her. I just ask that people step up and not only pull the lever but make an educated and better guided decision.

Good luck voting everyone!

Thanks, Chris.

That's a great test. If anyone hasn't taken it they should. I was closest to Obama….

Ryan,

I love this post. I completely agree with history in the making – it's beautiful to see minorities having a serious shot at becoming president of the United States. It makes this election year that much more special, and I'm excited to be a part of it by voting.

And you're a good guy – I don't even think I'm completely over the Patriots losing the Superbowl =D and they aren't my favorite team. Undefeated just sounds so good…

Thanks, Monica!

Maybe I'm not completely over the Patriots losing….. The fact that Ryan Paugh is a Giants fan doesn't help at all!

While I agree it's important to vote in the primaries, voting in the Nov. election is really important too! I was dismayed to find out how many of my Gen X friends hadn't bothered to register, and I hope that same attitude of nonchalance is not going to persist in the general election. I say, No excuses, Get out there and take advantage of your civil liberty!
